Obituary

Catherine “Kay” Anders, 97, beloved wife of the late Adam J., passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2019.

A devoted mother, teacher, mentor, and friend of many. Way ahead of her time, she set an example of a good education, her inclusion of others, and was a true legend of an educator.

Catherine was born in Holden, West Virginia on April 18, 1922 to the late Joseph and Costanza Marasco. Her family moved to Michigan when Kay was about nine years old. She married the love of her life, Adam J. Anders, and was blessed with a daughter, Susan. Tragically, Adam died when Susan was a young girl at the age of nine. She knew she had to make a better life for her family and decided she would start college while in her 40’s and get her education. She went on to receive her Master’s degree in Education at Eastern Michigan University. She was an amazing teacher. The kind of teacher students remembered for a lifetime and always kept in touch. She touched the lives of many youth in the Riverview Community School District teaching fourth grade for many years. Catherine was humbly inducted into the Riverview Hall of Fame with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Growing up with Italian parents, she was proud of her roots and cherished cooking and getting people together. All her teacher friends loved that she would bring spaghetti for all them from time to time. Catherine was wonderful at bringing children with different backgrounds together as well. She started the first ethnic festival at school, encouraging children to celebrate their own heritage and share it with others. What seems normal today, she was way ahead of the times at that point.

Catherine was most proud to be a mother. She instilled the morals and values of being a good person in her daughter and taught all the important things in life while being a single parent. One of her best pieces of advice to her daughter was that sometimes life takes some twists and turns and times get tough, but our attitude is the one thing that we can control. If you can’t change anything else, at least you can always change your attitude. She also had a fun side. She took her daughter to rock concerts, loved to travel and explore the world, and truly had an adventurous inquisitive spirit. In her later years, she enjoyed antiquing, nature, and especially holidays when she could cook and entertain.

Kay will be greatly missed by not only her daughter, but by nieces, nephews, teacher friends, students, and any others that crossed her path.

Loving mother of Susan Piccirilli (David). Dear sister of the late Dominic Marasco (late Anne), Samuel Marasco, Rose Ruemenapp (late Charles), and Joseph Marasco (Patricia). Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 10:00 am until the time of memorial service at 12 noon at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel) 32515 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI (between 13-14 Mile) .

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit in Kay’s memory.
