Obituary

On December 24, 2019, Charles Daniel Comer, “Dan,” got his wings on Christmas Eve. Beloved husband of Barbara Kollar Comer for over 61 years was at his side at his passing. Dan was a lifelong Detroiter and Irish Catholic. He touched the lives of countless young men and their families during his tenure as teacher, coach, mentor and Assistant Principal at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School during the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Dan was born on April 24, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan to George and Germaine, and had two older brothers, Jim and Bill. He graduated from De LaSalle High School in Detroit in 1950. Dan attended the University of Detroit, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1954 and a master’s degree in European history in 1956. During this time, he played football for the 'Titans' as tackle. After graduating, Dan joined the faculty of University Detroit Jesuit High School in 1957 where he worked through the spring of 1974.

Dan spent 17 years in multiple jobs during his time at “the High.” He was known for his Irish wit, charm and gift-of-gab. He wore many hats over his tenure: history teacher- including Advanced Placement European History, head basketball coach, assistant coach and Assistant Principal to name a few. Over the years, Coach Comer would run into students all time, in and around metro Detroit. Many have become significant contributors to the Detroit area and are very successful executives and business owners.

Dan is survived by wife Barbara; three daughters, Lisa Molenda (Don), Janice Bradley, and Tricia Pray (Chris). Grandpa to Danny & Devon Benoit, Jeffrey and Carolyn Bradley, Gabby and Max Wagerson, and Beatrix Pray.

Family will receive friends Friday, December 27, 2019 from 3-8pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons, 2600 Crooks Rd. (btwn Maple & Big Beaver), (248) 362-2500, Troy.

Funeral Mass Saturday, December 28, 2019, 11am at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3691 Lincoln Rd., Bloomfield Hills. Visitation at church begins at 10am.
