Obituary

Christine James (née Giftos) died April 14th, 2019, at age 85. Chris was born in 1934 in Kyparassia, Greece, and immigrated to the United States in 1946 at the age of 12. She grew up, with her brother Jim and sister Joan, on the east side of Detroit, and attended Eastern High.

Chris’ focus in life was devotion to her family, especially grandchildren, her church, her work in real estate, and her love of cooking, gardening, and playing pinochle.

Chris was married to her beloved husband Jimmie (1928-2004) for 50 years and was the mother to four boys: Bill (Eileen), Tom (Jodi), John (Karen), and Steve (food). Her grandchildren Evan, Claire, Alexa, and Sophie gave her immense joy and they will always remember their grandmother as the provider of endless warmth, love, inspiration, guidance, and “yiayia bellies”.

After Chris’ children were well into their schooling, she wanted to do more to help her family. For Chris, this was self-employment, which allowed her to balance time between work and family. She started with Avon, then Fashion Frocks clothing, building a base of clients through her impeccable customer service and caring for her clients. Chris then found her other true love in real estate, starting in 1976 with B.F. Chamberlain. She immediately became one of the company’s top performers, and enjoyed over 40 years of helping her “real estate” families.

Chris’ family will receive friends Thursday, April 18, 2019 2-8 pm, with a Trisagion service at 7:30 pm, at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy (between Maple & Big Beaver), 248-362-2500.

The Funeral Service will be Friday, April 19, 2019 at 9:30 am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 760 W. Wattles, Troy. Visitation at the church begins at 9:00 am. Burial will be at White Chapel cemetery, followed by a luncheon back at St. Nicholas at approximately noon.

Memorial tributes to Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund, 1927 Rosa Parks Blvd., Detroit, MI 48216, or to any organization that helps veterans.
