Obituary

Donald Newman died at age 72 on November 18, 2018 at Beaumont Hospital after displaying great strength of spirit in a years’-long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on May 6, 1946 to Sophia Rosenzweig and Dr. Max Karl Newman, and was one of five children: Martin, Phyllis, Steven (Katy), Donald (Marilyn) and Geoffrey (Vicki).

After graduation from Mumford High in Detroit and the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, “Dr. Don,” as he was known, worked for over forty years as a family physician, practicing chiefly in the Southfield, Michigan area.

Dr. Don was loved and respected by his colleagues, friends and family, including his numerous nieces and nephews, for his sharp mind, keen wit and charm. His patients, to whom he gave great personalized care, were devoted to him.

Dr. Don was characterized by an easy-going approach to all and silent generosity to those in need with whom he came in contact, particularly patients who had been injured on-the-job, for whom he frequently provided expert witness medical testimony.

In 2000, he married Marilyn Kelly, a former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. Their happy life together included frequent travel during which, to the delight of his wife, he became a proficient scuba diver and sailor.

His funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 11a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m. at the A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodger & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward (between 13 and 14 Mile Roads, 248-549-0500. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the same location from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Memorial tributes may be made to Henry Ford Hospital Movement Disorders Center or Leader Dogs for the Blind.
