Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Anne Carlson
May 12, 1930 ~ March 1, 2020

Married 64 years.

Betty worked most of her adult life including running a tailoring business while raising her two children. She was an accomplished seamstress sewing everything from clothes to evening gowns and coats and some of her grandchildren’s favorite Halloween costumes. She also did remarkable needlework.

After growing up in West Virginia her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she spent her working life. She worked in and managed offices for the American Gas Association, Singers, Fason, and the Regional Planning Commission of Northern Ohio. Upon retirement she and her husband, Vern, moved to Sun City, Florida and lived there for many years. Following the death of her husband she relocated to Michigan to be near family.

In addition to working, Betty was involved in many civic and charitable organizations. She taught Sunday school and participated in the care of her church’s missionaries. She was very involved in the Eastern Star, the Ladies Oriental Shrine and Shriners and enjoyed volunteering at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Betty was involved in scouting and community youth activities in support of her children and the community. While in Florida she dispatched rides for seniors in retirement and went back to work as a health insurance advisor and spokesperson for seniors for General Electric.

Betty and Vern enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and Europe. In retirement they particularly enjoyed cruising and being based in Florida took many cruises around the Caribbean and Gulf. Her favorite cruise, though, was to Alaska. Betty also greatly enjoyed spending time with her brother, Ed, and following his career in motor race sports.

Betty Anne Carlson, March 1, 2020, Age 89. Beloved wife of the late Vern Carlson for 65 years. Loving mother of Roger (Sue) and Janet (Tom). Dear grandmother of Jennifer Schmotzer (John), David Carlson (Kelly) and Andrew Carlson (Melissa). Dearest great-grandmother of Madison, Meredith, Madeline, Elsie, Lucy, Graham and Hannah. Brother of Ed Conway (Pat) and aunt of Scott.

The Funeral Service will be on Saturday 11 a.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Rd. (between Maple and Big Beaver), 248-362-2500. Family will receive friends Saturday 10 a.m. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes to Shrine Hospital or Woodside Vision Foundation.
