Obituary

Gail Elizabeth Steinhauer, 68, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan passed away at home from cancer on February 6, 2019. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family (and kittens) during the last days of her life.

Gail was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 26, 1950 to Harry and Jean Steinhauer. She attended Northern Michigan University, where she was proud to be a Wildcat. Upon graduating with degrees in English and French, Gail taught classes in both of these subjects before attending the Detroit College of Law, where she received her Juris Doctorate. Gail then embarked on an esteemed career, working in provider contracting with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for more than 30 years, until retiring in 2013. Married to Thomas Jensen for 36 years, Gail and her husband were blessed with the birth of their daughter Kristine (Kris) Marie in 1987.

Long known for her enthusiasm and joie di vivre, Gail wholeheartedly embraced life. She frequently traveled internationally, sharing many adventures abroad with her beloved daughter Kris. Back at home she loved socializing with friends, attending lectures at the local Community Center, and doting on her beloved cats Sofie and Kaylie. An avid tennis fan and amateur genealogist, Gail could often be found enjoying these hobbies with a glass of red wine or an India Pale Ale (IPA) in her hand.

Throughout the course of her cancer treatment, true to form, Gail adopted the nickname “One Tough Bitch” (aka “OTB.”) Those who were lucky enough to have known her will always remember Gail for her sharp sense of humor, exuberant spirit, intelligence, and poise-- someone who truly lived life to the fullest.

She is survived by husband Thomas Jensen, daughter Kris Jensen (Jeanni), siblings Jeanette Steinhauer-Devon and Thomas Steinhauer (Pat), and 14 nieces and nephews. Gail is preceded in death by her parents Harry and Jean Steinhauer and her sister Sue Mikulak (Ron).

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 9th at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), located at 32515 Woodward Ave in Royal Oak. Burial will follow at Acacia Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 8th between the hours of 2:00 and 8:00 PM.

Memorials may be given to the Smile Train, PO Box 96231, Washington, DC 20090-6231, or Alternatives for Girls, 903 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48208.

The family of Gail Steinhauer wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to all of those who have cared for and supported Gail throughout this time.
