Jack Dunleavy of Bloomfield Hills, 79, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2020.
Born on November 24, 1940, Jack graduated from Detroit Cathedral Central High School in Detroit in 1959. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for six years.
Jack joined his father, John (Squire) Dunleavy, an immigrant from Ireland who was issued the third liquor license in Detroit immediately following the end Prohibition, to begin his long career in the bar/restaurant business. In 1961 they opened Dunleavy's Irish Pub in Detroit. After his dad's death Jack went on to open Dunleavy's Pub & Grub in Farmington and Dunleavy’s River Place in downtown Detroit.
Jack loved people and people loved him. He knew how to liven up any social gathering. Jack was active in the Irish community in Detroit supporting many charities. Jack's love of golf included hosting many outings through the years and he was a founding member of the "Button's Invitational" held in Harbor Springs. Jack loved football and was involved with the Detroit Lions Organization for over 25 years. He also enjoyed making the rounds to his favorite restaurants/bars throughout Detroit.
Son of the late John and Sally Dunleavy. Loving husband to Bonnie Dunleavy for 54 years. Dear father of Sean and Ryan Dunleavy. Brother of Mary Florence O’Brien (George), Sally Jo Luyckx, and Pat Goren (Ed). Uncle to many cherished nieces and nephews. Also an extended family of cousins, both in the country and abroad.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Jack’s favorite church on Thursday, March 12, 2020, 10:30am at Most Holy Trinity Church, 1050 Porter St., Detroit. Visitation at church begins at 10am.
