Obituary

Karen Elizabeth Scimeca passed away February 11, 2020 at the age of 60 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of Michael. Loving mother of Jason, Eric, and Stacey. Devoted sister of Barb (Robert), Rick (Linda), and the late Bobby. Dear sister-in-law of Tom (Joan), Cathy (Dan), and Rick. Caring aunt of Karen, Janine, Stephen (Bronwyn), Nick, Ashley (Dan), and the late Christopher.

Karen grew up in Allen Park, Michigan and met her husband Mike in 1975 at Cabrini High School. They were married seven years later and raised three wonderful children in Lathrup Village and Beverly Hills. Karen earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Eastern Michigan University in special education. Karen touched many lives as an assistant administrator and teacher in the preschool at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, and many of her former students and their parents would share their loving feelings when they saw her even years later. Karen had a special talent for planning and organizing events and was well known for her ability to host events for the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sporting teams, and church groups. Karen took those skills to U-M where she was an assistant director of annual giving for the office of development at Michigan Medicine. She worked there full time four days of the week and spent Fridays volunteering at the Euro-Peds Foundation in Pontiac.

At home, Karen was known for her gracious hosting of family and friends and would transform the house for every holiday. Every guest came into Karen’s welcoming arms and even first-time visitors left with a feeling of family. She loved spending time at their cottage up north where she especially loved reading on the beach. If you met Karen you would know her priorities were God and family. She had special devotion to the Blessed Virgin and always found comfort reading prayers with family and friends. They knew Karen as caring and kind, intelligent and humble, selfless and loving; friends are encouraged to share their own memories and stories below.

Family will receive friends Friday, February 14, 2020 from 2-8pm with a Rosary 7pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Ave. (btwn 13-14 Mile), (248) 549-0500.

Euro-Peds Foundation

The EPF was established in 2013 to raise and administer funds for children who have special needs and their families. The foundation primarily awards treatment grants to help cover the cost of specialized intensive physical therapy at Euro-Peds, a nationally-recognized center for children and young adults who have cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, genetic syndromes, spina bifida and other gross motor disorders. The EPF believes that EVERY CHILD DESERVES A FIRST STEP; and we know that the expert team at Euro-Peds understands that mobility matters! Whether the child is learning to shift his weight to assist with a transfer, developing balance to sit in a chair or learning to walk, each of these steps gives the child a level of independence, improved function and mobility that matters.
