September 4, 1962 - February 11, 2020
Born in California
Resided in Metro Detroit
Mark Thomas Dahlin was born on September 4, 1962 in California to William Reinhold Dahlin and Patricia Norah Dahlin (nee Gilmore). He died unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, in a drowning accident while on vacation with his wife Jackie in Barbados. Mark was 57 years old.
Mark grew up with his family in Metro Detroit, Michigan. He attended Our Lady Queen of Martyrs grade school, graduated from Groves High School, and attended Grand Valley State University. Following college, he began working for Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. in Troy Michigan, an international research and production innovator in the solar energy field. Mark advanced to an engineering position, designing and supervising installations of solar panel production lines in the United States and Italy. While at ECD, Mark met and married his wife Jackie. After many years with ECD, he was recruited as a Senior Engineer by Tex-Mac in North Carolina, a manufacturing solutions firm for Advanced Technology.
Although he loved cars and all things motorized, Mark's heart and soul belonged to God and the natural world. He and Jackie made their homes in Michigan, then North Carolina, as sanctuaries on acres of undeveloped land. They rescued and raised their own pets, like Riley, the blind and deaf cat, and their dog Pennie. They also rescued and restored wilder ones such as owl, deer, ducks, rabbits, and more. If an adventure beckoned, Mark answered, from skydiving to scuba diving. Like humorist Will Rogers, he entertained every introduction as an opportunity: βI never yet met a man I didn't like.β Beloved by his family and a loyal friend to many people at home and in Europe and Asia, he will be remembered as a free spirit with a pure heart, a ready smile, and always a good story to tell.
Mark is survived by his best friend and beloved wife of thirty-two years, Jacqueline (Jackie nee Woerner); mother Patricia Dahlin, brother Gregory Dahlin (Marlene); sisters Moira McGraw (Tom), Adele Dahlin (George Jackson), and Susan Tondera (Rick); mother-in-law Olive Woerner, sisters-in-law Gay Amalfitano and Rhonda Powondra, many cousins, fifteen nieces and nephews, and a new generation of grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The family is deeply grateful for the loving support of Mark's friends. In accordance with Mark's wishes, his family will honor him with a small private Memorial Mass. Friends may send condolences to A. J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak, MI 48073. Memorial donations may go to charity of choice.
βHe was a man, take him for all in all. [We] shall not look upon his like again.β
(Shakespeare, William. Hamlet 1.2)
