Obituary

Mary Catherine Jerneycic passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, June 1, 2019. Mary Kay was the daughter of Maureen and Frank. She was the beloved sister of Laura and Dan Jerneycic, and Alisa and Dave Jerneycic. She will forever be the loving Auntie Saye Saye of Lucas, Kylie, Noah, Zachary, and Alex Jerneycic. Mary Kay is also survived by numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends.

Mary Kay was a strong, beautiful, spiritual woman who loved her family and friends.

Mary Kay was born as the first and favorite on May 22, 1973 to Maureen and Frank Jerneycic. After graduating from St. Hugo of the Hills Grade School in Bloomfield Hills and Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, she attended the University of Michigan where she earned her bachelor’s in Engineering in 1994 and would further go on to earn an MBA from U of M in 2009.

She was a true overachiever. With her strong personality, independence, and smarts, she set the bar extremely high for her younger siblings. After graduation Mary Kay spent the first part of her career in the paper industry, working in Kentucky, Ohio, Massachusetts, and upstate New York before moving back home to Michigan in 2004. She spent the remainder of her career in Professional Services, assisting automotive OEMs and their suppliers to ensure production continuity, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency. She was a critical thinker with the unique ability and passion for problem solving. Regardless of the job or location, she consistently produced extraordinary results and adoring friend networks.

She was kind and loving. Mary Kay was perpetually positive and left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her deep sense of “family” went way beyond the confines of bloodline relationships, as anyone she touched will attest. Above all, the love of Mary Kay’s life were her nephews Lucas, Noah, Zachary, and Alex and her niece Kylie. Auntie Saye Saye, as she was called, was loved so deeply by her niece and nephews and she adored every minute she had with each them, hosting countless sleepovers, dinners, and sponsored trips to the movie theater, Target, and the Franklin Cider Mill. Even through her most painful times, the kids would always bring a beaming smile to her face.

She never missed a great time. Mary Kay always answered her phone and always said yes. She loved a good party, especially one with a bonfire or on a boat in Caseville. She organized and drove many lasting social traditions for her friends and family, including Smash Bash and Snow Bash. She loved laughing and playing games and especially loved country music and singing even when not in a karaoke situation. Whether it was gin rummy or Skip-Bo with her parents, whiskey drinks with her brothers, breakfast with her nephews and niece, McDonalds chats or trips to visit her cousins, movies with her friends, or bon fires with everyone, you could always count her in.

She was generous and caring. In her free time, Mary Kay supported and served several community groups, as a board member and committee chair for the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS), an active supporter and Kitchen Cabinet member of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and a member of the Cardinal Club of Detroit.

She was courageous and strong. Six years ago, Mary Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer. After several surgeries and treatment cycles her health stabilized, only to be diagnosed with metastatic bone cancer just three years later. She fought every step of the way, electing treatment and longevity over less painful, often easier alternatives. Even as she endured countless surgeries, treatments, and broken bones, she never lost hope.

The Jerneycic family will receive friends on Thursday, June 6, 2019 from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy, MI (between Maple and Big Beaver Roads). 248-362-2500
