Obituary

Mary Louise Janes

Mary Lou was born on February 15, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William T. and Julia Hughes (Hanlon). She grew up with her sister Judy and brothers William and Robert in Cleveland, Ohio. Graduating from St. Augustine Academy in 1947, she went on to attend Chevy Chase Junior College in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1949.

After completing college, Mary Lou returned to Cleveland where she met the love of her life and future husband, Richard “Dick” Janes, while he was working for the Cadillac Motor Co. manufacturing tanks. She married Dick on November 22, 1952, and relocated to the Detroit area, ultimately settling in Bloomfield Hills where they raised their two children, Joanna (Boeckl) and Robert “Bob” Janes. They enjoyed more than 61 years or marriage together.

Highlights of their long and caring marriage were adventures abroad to Rome and Jerusalem, visiting their son Bob in Athens, Greece. Time spent with family and friends in Lost Lake Woods Club, Metamora and Bay Harbor, Michigan, as well as Ocean Reef and Boca Grande, Florida. Swimming and tennis at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club, a shared appreciation for fine art and a glass of wine, as well as the opportunity to meet then-President George W. Bush and His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Mary Lou was fond of being in the company of others, which led her to enjoy supporting and volunteering for various artistic, cultural and Catholic institutions and organizations. She was an avid supporter of Cranbrook Art Academy, the College for Creative Studies, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Opera House, the International Visitors Council, Cornerstone Schools, Legatus, the Beaumont Foundation, Concours D'Elegance, Ave Maria School, Capuchin Soup Kitchen of Detroit and the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C.

Mary Lou was preceded in the passing by her husband Dick in 2013, and brother William in 1992. After the death of her husband, Mary Lou drew great support and comfort from the friendships made and enjoyed at The Heathers in Bloomfield Hills and All Seasons in Birmingham.

Mary Lou is survived by her daughter Joanna Boeckl (Marc), her son Robert Janes, grandchildren Brian Boeckl (Katherine), and Lindsay Boeckl, as well as, great-grandchildren Andreas Boeckl and Imogen Boeckl.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 25th at A.J. Desmond & Sons at 32515 Woodward Ave. (between 13 and 14 Mile) Royal Oak, from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 26th at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon St., Birmingham, at 10:00 am with visitation at 9:30 am.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen (cskdetroit.org), or the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book (hsfotb.org).
