Michael passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, February 21, 2020. Michael was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 7, 1949 to the late John and Marion Thomson and was the oldest of seven children. He was preceded in death by his late brother, Patrick Thomson (the late Joann Mitchell), and his late brother, John Thomson. He is survived by his sister Margaret Conroy (the late Dan), his brother Morgan (Dawn Schimansky), his sister Ann O'Neil (Michael), and his brother Thomas Thomson (Donna Struck). He was raised in Ferndale, MI before moving to Royal Oak, MI.
Michael graduated from St. James High School in Ferndale in 1967. Following high school, Michael proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970. While serving in Vietnam, Michael earned many awards and medals.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn, and children. Colleen Graffte (Karl), Kathleen Darling (Brian), Michael Thomson (Brittney Scero), Sara Arena (Derek), Kenneth Barnard (Anja Funkhauser) and Thomas Barnard. Mike was proud to be the grandfather of 17 grandchildren; Kenneth, Alec, Kaitlin, Kyler, Audrey, Kelsey, Collin, Justine, Abigail, Aidan, Sophia, Owen, Graham, Dominic, Kynleigh, Easton and Cullen. Michael leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Michael had an extremely strong work ethic. His first job was at the age of 15 at Ken's Market in Ferndale. He later worked at Peppy's Hamburger’s on Woodward and 10 Mile as well as the International Animal Exchange while in high school. Upon returning from Vietnam, Michael began his career in the Credit Union industry. His vision, leadership, and persistence lead to over forty years in various Credit Union positions including President and CEO. Mike's leadership had a tremendous impact on the people that worked with and for him, including the community at large. After retirement, Michael moved to the Auburn Grove community in Auburn Hills, MI. Michael served his community condo association as president for the past five years. Michael took great pride in continuously making improvements and leading the community as they solved everyday problems. He was well respected and liked by all who knew him.
Michael enjoyed researching his Scottish/Irish heritage, woodworking, playing the guitar, listening to oldies and painting landscapes. He enjoyed a good cigar, spending time with family, friends, and being the life of the party. Michael's quick wit, and sense of humor will surely be missed by all. Michael loved his family more than anything. He leaves behind a legacy of many wonderful memories for all that knew him.
Mike’s family will receive friends Monday from 2-8PM with a scripture service at 7 PM at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Rd., Troy (between Maple and Big Beaver Rds.). Funeral Mass, Tuesday 10 AM at St. John Fisher Chapel, 3665 E. Walton Blvd., Auburn Hills, MI with visitation at church beginning at 9:30 AM.
