Obituary

Name: Nancy Loud Kern
Birth: July 24, 1926
Death: December 25, 2019
Location: Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Nancy Loud Kern passed peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25,2019 in Bloomfield Hills. She was 93 years old. Nancy was born in Detroit on July 24th, 1926, daughter of Percy Kyle Loud and Elizabeth (Betty) Parker Loud. Her father was the former President of Wright Kaye Jewelers in downtown Detroit, where the building still stands at 1500 Woodward Avenue.

Nancy grew up in Bloomfield Hills and attended Kingswood School Cranbrook with her two late sisters, Judy Lou Ackerman and Susan Loud MacMillan, and was an active member of Sigma Gamma Association. She attended Bradford Junior College in Massachusetts, and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority at the University of Michigan from where she graduated with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. As a nursery school and Sunday school teacher, she would later become the Director of Echo Park School. She sat on the State of Michigan Education Board, and also earned her brokers license selling real estate for many years. Her love of teaching and reading is a treasured memory of each of her many grandchildren.

In May of 1949, Nancy married Richard Charles Kern of Bloomfield Hills, and Vice President of the Kern Department Store in Detroit, where the Kern Clock still stands. Together they raised their family in Franklin, Michigan on the Franklin River. She was active in her community being President of the Board of Trustees of Detroit Orthopaedic Clinic through Sigma Gamma, and of the National Society of Colonial Dames-Michigan. Nancy loved singing in the choirs of The Junior League of Birmingham, Michigan and Christ Church Cranbrook. She sang in the church choir for some 70 years. She enjoyed snow skiing, winning a Grandmother’s Race at Otsego Ski Club; tennis, a beauty of the fashion; and was a devoted golfer at Orchard Lake County Club. She was also an avid gardener and a life-long member of the Franklin Garden Club.

Beloved wife of the late Richard (Dick) Charles Kern for 61 years, Nancy is survived by her children, Kerry Byerly (Robert) of SanDiego, California, Richard Charles, junior of Yuma, Arizona, and Jeffrey Loud (Susan) of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; her grandchildren Rand, Kelsey, Brittany, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Clayton, Mackenzie and Paget; and nine great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial celebration service at Christ Church Cranbrook on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 1 o’clock.

The Kern family suggests memorial tributes to the Christ Church Cranbrook Music Fund, 470 Church Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48304 or Compassionate Care Hospice of Michigan, 5730 North Lilly Road, Suite A, Canton, Michigan 48187.
