Obituary

Richard J. Thomas Jr. passed away November 28, 2019 at the age of 100.

Loving husband of 69 years of the late Gertrude. Dear father of Nancy Horner (the late Jack), grandfather or Richard Horner, Jennifer Larkin, and great-grandfather of Jack Larkin.

He was born in Cornwall, England and at 9 years of age came to the United States in 1929 with his parents Richard and Bessie Thomas and his sister Sylvia.


He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1937 and started his banking career in 1939 at the Wabeek State Bank of Detroit at its headquarters in the Fisher building.

He furthered his education by attending many banking courses with the Detroit Institute of Banking and later graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.

H retired in 1984 after 45 years of banking as Vice President of Comerica Bank.

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 serving the last two years in Europe during World War II.

He participated in many civic programs including member & Director of the Detroit Jacees, Director & Treasurer of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chairman of the First Birmingham Fair, Director of the Birmingham YMCA, and Chairman of the 1968 Michigan Week for the city of Birmingham. Life member of the Birmingham Lions Club and the Senior Mens Club of Birmingham.

Family will receive friends Monday, December 2, 2019, from 2-7 PM at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers, Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Ave. (btwn 13-14 Mile), (248) 549-0500.
