Obituary

Age 71 of Bloomfield Hills passed away suddenly on 6/12/19 after a short bout with cancer.

The loving son of the late Margaret (Lorentzen) and William Hames, who preceeded him in death.

Bill lived the majority of his life in Huntington Woods and Bloomfield Hills, MI except for a short stay in South Carolina on Dataw Island.

Bill was a gifted teacher in the Ferndale elementary school system, retiring after 25 years. He attended Michigan State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters degree. He was highly regarded by his students and recognized by one of the graduating seniors as "the best teacher she ever had". That honor made the daily job a lot sweeter for him.

As a child in the 1950's Bill spent many summers on the family farm in New Richmond, Wisconsin. There he was thrilled to learn how to drive a tractor, milk the dairy cows and farm the fields.

He was a nature lover enjoying and feeding the many wild animals, deer, birds, squirrels, etc., near his home. Bill was a talented musician, accomplished at playing the guitar and harmonica and teaching others. He loved to travel to various European counties including Iceland, Scandinavia, Greece, England etc. He was a life long photographer documenting his many travels with the people and nature he saw there. He displayed his photos at a public reception on two occasions, at 'The Woods Gallery' (lower level of Huntington Woods Public Library) in Huntington Woods. He was a true “foodie” with an ardent interest in new food experiences as he traveled.

Bill is survived by his cousins, Paul (Susan) Jorgensen, Dataw Island, SC; Eric Lorentzen, Rochester Hills, MI; John (Kathy) Lorentzen, Saginaw, MI and many friends. He was preceeded in death by cousins Rick (Kathy) Lorentzen, Saginaw, MI, Rob Lorentzen, Saginaw, MI, Kay Lorentzen, originally from Royal Oak, MI.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak for caring for Bill in his final days.

He will be missed by numerous friends and family.

Family funeral service will be held.

May the sun shine warmly upon your face, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
